Title: Letter to Pope Damasus on the death of St. Jerome
Language:
Italian
Folio Number: f. 79v
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial M
Notes: On this folio, a later artist has added marginal decoration and a fanciful initial letter. The letter M here is made up of sawn branches and is further decorated with extensions of leafy boughs. Because there was not enough room in the text, the artist drew the M in the margin and used an arrow to point to the place in the text that the initial belongs. This later decoration was probably added in 1553. That date appears on the last page of the manuscript, beneath the text and above an image of Veronica's veil that appears to be in the same hand as the decoration on this page.
