Notes:

Bhishma tells Yudhishthira the story of a king’s son disappearance while hunting in the mountains. Desperate to recover him, the king visits a sage to plead for his help, as depicted in this painting. While the story ends on a triumphant note, with the sage reuniting father and son, here the artist has chosen to focus on a quiet moment between the sage and the king. The painting is an exercise in contrasts. The sinewy, emaciated body of the sage is vividly juxtaposed with the healthy figure of the king. The artist’s expert use of stippling (small, short touches of paint) imparts subtle distinctions of shadow and light.
