Gad’s Hill Place

Higham by Rochester, Kent.

Saturday Night Twenty Third May, 1863

Dear Sir

I hope you will not measure the cordiality of my recognition of your frank letter (which of course I receive in confidence), by the tardiness of my reply. I have been much engaged and much away.

Even now, I am unable to make an appointment, or propose a time for availing myself of your kindly proffered introduction. For I have a large arrear to clear off gradually, and cannot bear to do any thing that I am not reasonably sure of doing with exactness.

For the present therefore, I confine myself to thanking you for your interesting communication, and to assuring you that I hope I perfectly understand and appreciate its spirit. Trusting that I shall be able to resume its subject with you personally, I beg you to believe me.

Yours faithfully and obliged

Charles Dickens

The Rev. Henry Ward
