Notes: The Britton is the earliest French summary of English laws. The first part of the text claims that it was written at the command of Edward I (1239-1307). The authorship of the work is a matter of dispute, with most sources attributing the work to John le Breton, the Bishop of Hereford (d. 1275). Another theory attributes the text to Henry de Bracton (d. 1268), a jurist famous for his De Legibus et Consuetudinibus Angliae and whose name was sometimes spelled Bratton or Bretton. The text of this manuscript is headed with the word "Bractun," supporting the latter theory.
The initial P begins a chapter on the legal seizure of land or property.
