Devonshire Terrace.
  Nineteenth July 1849.
My Dear Horne.
  I got a fall last Sunday week (in jumping, for the edification of my children, over a big man’s head), and so hurt my side that I was obliged to be smartly cupped and blistered, and to go away to Broadstairs for some sea-bathing. I am but now returned. In the mean time, however, I had put some machinery in motion for getting at Mr. Van Voorst, and today the story has gone to him. I have thought it prudent to imply that I think the conclusion might be a little altered, with advantage to the tale, and that in the event of his undertaking it and complying with my conditions, I will answer for its being done. I think this will strengthen our hands, and I hope you approve?
  On Monday I leave town. My address will be

  Isle of Wight
- where I shall remain until the end of September; but my communication with Mr. V. V. is quite as direct, and possesses as much authority (how much I don’t know) as if I had him here. I have added to my own influence that of somebody else to whom he is really obliged, and I really believe that his inclination towards us will not be booksellerish.
  As soon as I hear his answer, you shall hear from me.
