Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 1r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: First page of the manuscript
Notes: This manuscript contains five plays by the second-century B.C. Latin playwright Terence: Andria (the Girl from Andria), Eunuchus (The Eunuch), Heautontimoroumenos (The Self-Tormentor), Adelphia (The Brothers), and Phormio. Terence remained popular throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
This manuscript is also significant for being a palimpsest, meaning that the parchment had been used before and the earlier writing was scraped off so that the pages could be reused. One can still make out the faint traces of the old text on the leaf shown here.
