 Reinforced bumpers featuring self-restoring energy absorbers in the front will enable 1973 Buicks to more than meet federal standards requiring new cars to withstand 5-m.p.h. front and 2 1/2-m.p.h. rear barrier collisions without damage to safety systems. The absorbers are air/hydraulic units, located between the bumper and frame, which help dissipate low speed impact energy by allowing the bumper to compress from two and one-half to three inches. Heavier gauge faceplates, high strength bracketry and bolt-in steel reinforcements will provide additional bumper protection both front and rear. Optional rubber protective strips with attractive white highlight stripes, and bumper guards will also be available. Another feature of the 1973 Buick bumpers are slots in the underside of the faceplate for positive engagement of the lifting blade on the car jack.
