Notes:
This 1841 watercolor, "Philadelphia and Smith Island," by Philadelphia artist Augustus Kollner, depicts a peaceful scene on the Delaware River. The painting features Smith Island--a block wide and a mile long, extending southward from Arch Street to South Street--located halfway between the port of Philadelphia on the left and Camden, NJ, on the right. In 1838, the island was split in two by a canal, to facilitate ferry traffic to Camden; the second island was named Windmill Island. Then in 1891, both islands were removed, to accommodate larger vessels for shipping commerce.
