Dear Sir.
I should have replied to your letter of the Sixteenth of last month before now, but that I have been in Scotland ever since its receipt, and have only just returned to town.
I have read your poems with very great interest, pleasure and delight.  I have been greatly struck by the history of your life, and by the struggles and vicissitudes you are undergoing.  Your writings have a peculiar charm for me, as I presume they have for most persons, after reading your adventures; but there are many beautiful pieces in your book which would have attracted my attention, I think, under any circumstances.
You will excuse me, however, if I beg you to consider this as private communication.  I have a great objection to seeing my opinions quoted, as though I had delivered them oracularly; and I cannot surmount it.
You cannot desire, or have a better testimony that Mr. Howitt's.  He is a writer with whom most people of any thought, feeling, or taste, have sympathized most warmly; and in whose books I, for one, have found great improvement and satisfaction of heart-- much more that I can express in theses few hasty words.
