Notes: This initial begins the first response of the first nocturn of Matins for the feast of St. Lucy (Dec. 13), "Lucia virgo quid a me petis quod ipsa poteris prestare continuo matri tue ..." (O virgin Lucy, why do you ask of me what you yourself can procure for your mother?). According to the legend of St. Lucy, these are the words that St. Agatha said to her when she was praying for the saint's aid in healing her mother Eutychia, who had suffered four years with a "bloody flux."
