This 1907 image of Market Street is from the Library’s collection of photographs by John Gibb Smith—a mechanical engineer and Philadelphia resident, with a particular interest in trolley cars.  The construction underway in this image is a phase of the subway and elevated transportation systems projects, begun in 1905; Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company’s trolleys alone were no longer able to handle the demand for faster mass transit in the city.  This section of the construction is along Market Street, east of City Hall.
