Emma Lillian Brock was born on June 11, 1886, in Fort Shaw, Montana. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1908 and then studied at the Minneapolis School of Art from 1910 to 1914 and the Art Students League in New York from 1928 to 1932. Brock worked on and off as an assistant librarian for the Minneapolis Public Library in the Art Department from 1914 to 1932 and also spent time as an assistant librarian in the Children’s Department of the New York Public Library from 1921 to 1928. She wrote and illustrated more than thirty books for children, including Runaway Sardine (1929), Pig with a Front Porch (1937), and Pancakes and the Merry-Go-Round (1960), as well as the "Mary" and "Kristie" series. Her book, Here Comes Kristie (1942), was made into a television special for the National Broadcast Company. She died on August 17, 1974.
