November 19 – Cry Freedom (1987)
Based on true events, Cry Freedom tells the powerful story of the friendship between journalist Donald Woods and anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in 1970s South Africa. Directed by Richard Attenborough, the film traces Woods’ awakening to the realities of apartheid and his fight to expose the truth after Biko’s tragic death in police custody. Anchored by Denzel Washington’s Oscar-nominated performance as Biko, Cry Freedom is both an intimate portrait of courage and a sweeping political drama that shines a light on resistance, solidarity, and the global struggle for justice.
