Hispanic Heritage for Teens: Create your own vejigante!
Field Teen Center at Parkway Central Library
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning how to make a vejigante! JJoin us as we create these masks while enjoying the traditional rhythms of bomba and plena.
The vejigante is a colorful, masked figure from Puerto Rican folklore, featured in festivals and carnivals throughout the island. Originally derived from medieval Spanish traditions, these figures symbolized demons or defeated Moors. Over time, however, they evolved to represent cultural resistance and identity, blending Spanish, African, and Taíno influences.
Teens aged 12 to 18 are welcome to join us on Wednesday, September 24th to create their own mask.
Programs at the Field Teen Center are open to individuals ages 12 to 18. Organized groups (including camp groups and school groups) must contact the Teen Center to see if special arrangements are possible.
