July Discussion Topic | Improving Public Safety in Philadelphia

The City of Philadelphia launched a series of initiatives to build safer communities, reduce violence, and reform the criminal justice system. According to a recent Pew Charitable Trusts report, the city has witnessed a decline in crime rate. In 2024, the city recorded the lowest total violent crime rates in the 21st century–a historic milestone. So far in 2025 both property and violent crimes are down compared to the same period last year.

But, is this progress enough? What challenges still remain? What are some of the alternative solutions Philly can explore to ensure lasting change?

Join WHYY News Community & Engagement team for ‘Bridging Blocks,’ a civic dialogue series in partnership with The Free Library of Philadelphia.

Host - Tony Cuffie, Senior Manager Community & Engagement, WHYY News

Moderator - Brisa Luzzi Castro, Community Convener, WHYY News

Bridging Blocks, a partnership between The Free Library of Philadelphia and WHYY, is made possible by a generous grant from Fred and Barbara Sutherland.
