Knitogami
Science and Wellness at Parkway Central Library
The ancient art of knitting can turn one-dimensional yarns into highly complex three-dimensional structures boasting a striking variety of shapes and unusual mechanics. Dr. Lauren Niu, Senior Research Scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, will discuss a geometric model to predict the self-folding patterns of knitted fabrics made only of the simplest two traditional stitches, knit and purl. Along the way, she will show how the curvatures of stitches generate curvatures in the fabric, and how these are related to fundamental mathematical properties of surfaces in space.
This program is free and open to the public and will be part of Parkway Central Library's amazing SewWhat program. Space is limited.
We'll be meeting in Rooms 131/132 of the Heim Center.
