Rowling wins suit against Harry Potter Lexicon publisher

By Shannon G RSS Thu, September 11, 2008

J.K. Rowling, the author behind the wildly successful Harry Potter series, recently won a lawsuit that had been brought against RDR Books, a publisher based in Michigan. The win halted the publication of The Harry Potter Lexicon, an all-things-Potter encyclopedia written by Steven Vander Ark, who runs a website by the same name. Rowling, along with Warner Bros. Entertainment, claimed that the book’s publication would infringe on Rowling’s copyright to the series. A U.S. district court judge ruled that RDR did not prove fair use of Rowling's material. RDR has said that it is considering an appeal.

I agree that it probably does violate her copyright and think she has a right to be compensated but I would love to see the book be published. I don't understand why a deal couldn't be worked out between all the parties. Maybe Rowling will strike a deal and be listed as a co-author or something so that the Harry Potter Lexicon book can see the light of day.

Did RDR win the appeal? From their website, it appears that the Lexicon is available next month (Jan 12, 2009).
