LAMP-PHL Reopens Recording Studio for Accessible Audiobooks

By Bridget G. RSS Wed, November 12, 2025

The Philadelphia Regional of the Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians (LAMP-PHL) is excited to announce the re-opening of its in-house recording studio. Certified by the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), LAMP-PHL's newly reopened studio will supply recording services for materials that our patrons request that have not been previously available in audio format, as well as additional recording services.

LAMP-PHL patrons may request that materials be recorded by calling the branch at 215-683-3213 or by sending an email to LAMP@freelibrary.org. Patrons may also receive an audio request survey in the mail in the upcoming months.

Interested in volunteering to narrate an audiobook for LAMP-PHL and our patrons? This exciting opportunity is available through the Free Library’s Volunteer Services division. Please note that these positions require a time commitment of two hours of recording time per shift for at least three months, estimating 25–30 hours per book. It takes longer to properly narrate a book than you would think!

LAMP offers people who have challenges accessing the printed word to assist in their love of reading by shipping free materials in braille, audio, described movies, and large-print publications directly to patrons across Pennsylvania and other neighboring states.

While LAMP-PHL is part of the Free Library of Philadelphia system, patrons of LAMP must go through a separate application process with NLS to verify eligibility to use the service. If you cannot read standard print due to blindness, a visual disability, or because you can’t hold a book or turn pages, or if you have a reading disability such as dyslexia, then this service is for you. You may submit an application form to us once the application has been certified by an NLS-approved authority. Review a comprehensive list of NLS-approved authorities for the LAMP application process at mylamp.org/eligibility.
