National Library Week is a time to celebrate the many ways libraries bring people together, spark imagination, and support lifelong learning. The celebration began in 1958 to acknowledge the role library services and staff play in our communities. National Library Week falls between April 6–12 this year.
The Free Library is an anchor of literacy, education, and freely accessible information for its patrons. National Library Week is a great time to reflect on the many reasons libraries are important to our communities.
We asked some of our staff why they love their libraries and gathered their answers below. We hope you love your library too and look forward to seeing you soon!
“I love my library because it is the hub of my community. Folks visit the library for programs, events, meetups, and just to hang out! Some are my childhood friends. This is my library and my community!” - Claire H., Library Supervisor, Lovett Memorial Library
“I love the Free Library because the potential to learn about anything is available, endless, and freely shared!” - Ashabi R., Library Assistant, Parkway Central Library
"The Free Library has always been a place where knowledge, community, and inspiration come together. I love how it serves as a hub for learning and connection, making a lasting impact on everyone who walks through its doors. I am truly grateful to all the staff who work tirelessly to ensure we continue to make that impact every day." - Priscilla S., First Deputy Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia
“I love how unique all 54 of our locations are! Each branch’s collections, services, and programs are managed with that specific community in mind. Philly is a city of many neighborhoods, and the Free Library system reflects that in the best way.” - Catherine C., Branch Manager, Oak Lane Library
“As a children’s librarian, I am humbled and grateful to work in a space that encourages literary growth. The library is a safe space for all to learn and explore new concepts at their own pace.” - Naderah B., Children’s Librarian, West Oak Lane Library
“I love that the Free Library is the University of the People!” - Ben R., Library Supervisor, Social Science and History Department
"Whenever I hear of a new book I want to read, I know that the Free Library will have it. I love the feeling of placing a hold on a book I'm excited about and the anticipation before it arrives!" - Bridget G., IT
