The Free Library of Philadelphia’s efforts to restore Frankford Library in Northeast Philadelphia are on track for completion in 2024.
Renovations to the library will include updates to the lobby, basement, facade, outdoor area, and an expanded Children’s Department. Patrons can also look forward to new restrooms (including a family bathroom), meeting spaces, and quiet study rooms.
Work completed thus far includes infrastructural improvements to the ventilation, plumbing, and electrical systems. Significant progress has also been made in implementing the floor plans for the new Teen Center and Children’s Department expansion.
These renovations were made possible by generous donations to the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation by benefactors including the William Penn Foundation; Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program; Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Pennsylvania Department of Education, with funds provided by the Keystone Recreation, Park, and Conservation Fund; Patrick J. McGovern Foundation; and The McLean Contributionship.
The Free Library of Philadelphia remains committed to keeping each of its branches fully operational so that all our patrons can participate in our initiatives to advance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity with millions of digital and physical materials.
The project is expected to be completed on schedule this summer, although there could be a delay between its conclusion and the reopening of the library. Area residents can visit libraries like the Bushrod Library, Holmesburg Library, McPherson Square Library, Northeast Regional Library, and Tacony Library until the Frankford branch reopens.
