What Will Your Reading Promise Be?

The Free Library and Read By 4th invite your family to join us for Reading Promise Week, October 10-16! This weeklong in-person event series serves as a catalyst for the Reading Promise initiative. Participating families pledge to read and create together, talk it up, champion school success, and protect their children’s right to read. By making reading a daily priority, we can all help our youngest learners move forward into the future they deserve. What will your Reading Promise be?

On this special week, you’re invited to the Philly family literacy festival with over 50 happening around your city, including read alouds by local authors, artists, and poets. Peruse the Reading Promise Week events calendar to take your pick of autumn storywalks and picnics, garden literacy and Latinx voices, Read, Baby, Read events for infants and toddlers, the #BlackMenRead photoshoot, and more! Here are just a few of the events happening at your neighborhood libraries.

And as a part of this literacy celebration, we’re giving away free books! Come to any Reading Promise Week event and go home with your own take-home reading materials sure to make kids smile. This collection of diverse stories was specially chosen in multiple languages to reflect the children of our city, and they’re yours to keep!

Want to be part of the fun online? Share reading tips, pictures, and fun from your events on social media by tagging @readby4th and using the hashtag #ReadingPromiseWeek.

It's nice that you have these events around town for children, but I just want to go into the library to check out a book. But I see that no libraries are open today (Saturday 10/15), even the main one. It seems that if I can't get there between 9-5 on weekdays, I'm out of luck! What about us adults?

Hi David, thank you for your comment! Unfortunately, our public service hours are dependent upon our staffing. The Free Library system is currently working to return to full staffing levels. In the meantime, I encourage you to check out our virtual offerings and materials. Thanks for being a patron!
