Sharing a meal is at the heart of Thanksgiving. Be it with friends or family, with new neighbors or with those in the larger community, the act of cooking and eating together brings us all together in gratefulness... just like these picture books!

A Feast for Joseph written by Terry Farish and O.D. Bonny; illustrated by Ken Daley

ebook available from Overdrive

When Joseph and Mama lived in a refugee camp in East Africa, everyone cooked and ate together. It’s much too quiet and lonely in his new home. Though Whoosh, the girl who lives upstairs, is friendly, Joseph misses having more people around, especially his grandmother, who still lives across the ocean. So he invites his relatives in the city to come for dinner, then he invites his teacher, then Whoosh and her mami—but everyone is too busy. Ever hopeful, Joseph picks the last greens from the garden. At least he and Mama will be ready to cook if someone visits. The next night Whoosh and her mami appear at the door with a big cake, and Whoosh and Joseph cook up a feast.

Our Little Kitchen by Jillian Tamaki

ebook available from Overdrive

In this lively, rousing picture book from Caldecott Honoree Jillian Tamaki, a crew of resourceful neighbors comes together to prepare a meal for their community. With a garden full of produce, a joyfully chaotic kitchen, and a friendly meal shared at the table, this book is a celebration of full bellies and looking out for one another.

Salma the Syrian Chef written by Danny Ahmad Ramadan; illustrated by Anna Bron

ebook available from Overdrive

All Salma wants is to make her mama smile again. Between English classes, job interviews, and missing Papa back in Syria, Mama always seems busy or sad. A homemade Syrian meal might cheer her up, but Salma doesn’t know the recipe, or what to call the vegetables in English, or where to find the right spices! Luckily, the staff and other newcomers are happy to lend a hand—and a sprinkle of sumac.

The Rice in the Pot Goes Round and Round written by Wendy Wan-Long Shang; illustrated by Lorian Tu

ebook available from Overdrive

At the table where this family gathers, they share food, laughter, and, most of all, love. Readers of all ages are sure to delight in this joyful, expressive sing-along, slurping noodles, squishing tofu, and tapping chopsticks as they sing along to this familiar tune.

The Blue Table by Chris Raschka

ebook available from Overdrive

Spend the day around the heart of a home—the blue table. A shopping list is written, food is prepared, and the table is set. Guests arrive, thanks are given, and a meal is shared. What then? It’s time to pitch in and clean up, of course!

Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora

ebook and audiobook available from Overdrive

When the aroma of Omu's homemade stew fills the air, her neighbors arrive one by one for a taste, until all is gone except for her generous spirit.

Our Table by Peter H. Reynolds

ebook available from Overdrive

Violet longs for the time when her family was connected: before life, distractions, and technology pulled them all away from each other. They used to gather at the table, with food and love, to make memories, share their lives, and revel in time spent together. But now her family has been drifting apart, and with nobody to gather around it, the table grows smaller and smaller. Can Violet remind her family of the warmth of time spent together, and gather around the table once more?

Around the Table That Grandad Built written by Melanie Heuiser Hill; illustrated by Jaime Kim

In a unique take on the cumulative classic This Is the House That Jack Built, a family gathers with friends and neighbors to share a meal around a table that brims with associations: napkins sewn by Mom, glasses from Mom and Dad’s wedding, and silverware gifted to Dad by his grandma long ago. Not to mention the squash from the garden, the bread baked by Gran, and the pies made by the young narrator (with a little help). Serving up a diverse array of dishes and faces, this warm and welcoming story is poised to become a savored part of Thanksgiving traditions to come.
