Summer Reading with Dena!

Yes, it’s that time of the year again, to head to the beach (or a heavily air conditioned reading nook) and dive into some fun reading!

Here are some new and newish books that are perfect for giving yourself a mental vacation:

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship alone, not knowing who he is or why he’s there. As he slowly pieces things together, he realizes that he is the last chance to save all of Earth. Despite the premise, Weir’s latest book is a hilarious and heartfelt story that is equal parts exciting and touching. The science is accessible even for the science-averse and it introduces one of the best characters in science fiction (no, it’s not Grace).

The Funny Thing About Norman Foreman by Julietta Henderson
11-year-old Norman Foreman has a five-year plan to get to Edinburgh and perform stand-up comedy at the Fringe with his best mate Jax. When Jax dies, Norman’s mom decides to do everything possible to make Norman’s dream a reality. But Norman was never the funny one, and he has to find his own path now that he’s no longer part of a double act. Funny, tender, and the perfect beach read.

The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting by K.J. Charles
Robin and his sister Marianne are charming, popular and... lying to everyone in Society. When Robin sets his sights on a wealthy heiress, her uncle is determined to prevent any match. But things go askew when the fortune hunter and the uncle find themselves falling for each other instead! This is a fun and frothy romance for those who want low angst and lots of banter.

The Bad Muslim Discount by Syed Masood
Anvar’s family moved to the States from Pakistan to find more freedom from a culture that was rapidly changing in the 1990s. Safwa is a refugee from Iraq who does whatever she can to get to safety. Although they have very different lives, Anvar and Safwa find themselves intertwined. This is a book about two very different sides of the immigrant journey to the United States.

She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
This is a book for those who like their fantasyhistorical, literary, and lengthy. This is an alternate history retelling of the rise of the Ming Dynasty in China. Zhu’s brother is told his fortune is to be great and her own is to be nothing. But when her brother dies, Zhu takes on his identity and his destiny for herself.

Seven Days in June by Tia Williams
Eva is a bestselling erotica author, living in Brooklyn and raising her precocious daughter. Shane is an enigmatic and famous literary author. Together they have a past that has remained hidden for twenty years. Over the course of seven days, sparks are reignited and old secrets are revealed. A funny, pointed, and touching love story.
