Writing is an important part of daily life. We are expected to communicate clearly through writing in many different situations. Whether for school assignments, work, or filling out forms, writing is inescapable.

As such, there is always room for improving your writing skills and the library offers many resources for this exact purpose:

Get feedback on your writing through Tutor.com
One key to improving your writing skills is getting feedback on your written work. You cannot improve your writing or learn from your mistakes without knowing what areas you need to improve! One resource to give you feedback on your writing is Tutor.com, a virtual resource that offers support to writers of all levels and ages. This helpline is free to all Free Libary card holders and is designed to help anyone from grade school up to adult learners. Tutor.com also provides online tutoring in English and Spanish every day of the week from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. There is also a feature that allows you to submit your writing samples (resumes, cover letters, emails, school assignments, short stories, etc.) for review. Within 12 hours of submitting your writing, you will receive detailed feedback on any mistakes and / or areas for improvement from a writing tutor.

Check out our catalog of books and ebooks on writing
The library also offers hundreds of print and ebooks that can aid learners in improving their writing. Ebooks can be accessed digitally from anywhere on a supported device, while physical books are available for pick-up at most neighborhood libraries as part of the available limited services currently being offered by the Free Library.

Take a writing course with Universal Class
You can improve your writing skills by taking an online course through Universal Class. Try Writing Improvement 101, Business Writing, Creative Writing for Beginners, or Mystery Writing 101 (all available for free with your library card) and get feedback from an online instructor as you work towards your personal writing goals.

Attend our Drop-In Writing Support virtual program
The library also has a partnership with the University of Pennsylvania that offers free virtual writing support. Bring your resume, cover letter, short story, email, or any other piece of writing you need to be reviewed and feedback will be provided by writing professors from the University of Pennsylvania. Sign-up to receive the Zoom link for next the weekly Wednesday session, which takes place from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
