Today we start a new series of blog post where we will highlight an ebook – a picture ebook, no less – that you can read at home, using the Free Library's Digital Media portal.

The library is here for you and your little one. We miss seeing you in person, but while we wait to re-open, you can count on our strong collection of titles that you can read on your computer, tablet, or smartphone. And that includes picture books!

Our first selection is Float by Daniel Miyares. A boy’s small paper boat—and his large imagination—fill the pages of this wordless picture book that includes endpaper instructions for building a boat of your own. A little boy takes a boat made of newspaper out for a rainy-day adventure. The boy and his boat dance in the downpour and play in the puddles, but when the boy sends his boat floating down a gutter stream, it quickly gets away from him. So, of course, the little boy searches for his beloved boat—and when the rain lets up, he finds himself on a new adventure altogether.

Wordless books offer a unique reading experience for adults and children. Readers become part of the story as visual storytellers themselves. The illustrations are the springboard from which a story is told, and Float's are stunning: with a limited palette of mostly gray and yellow, changing perspective, panels and expert use of light, shadow and reflection, Mr. Miyares places readers inside the rainy day (and cozy return home.)
