'Tis the Season for the Winter Reading Challenge

By Gennifer R. RSS Mon, November 25, 2019

As the weather changes, there's no better company than reading a good book in a cozy space. Running from November 25 to February 29, our Winter Reading Challenge invites readers of all ages to register and earn badges as they gather reading minutes, reach reading goals, try out new activities, and write their own book reviews! This year, we have a brand new addition—try out a writing challenge and engage in your creative side! With each badge earned, readers are entered into a mystery raffle where they can win unique prizes.

This year the special book award badges you can earn will be in honor of and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Coretta Scott King Book Award!

The Winter Reading Challenge is a great way to stay motivated during Winter Break and the holiday season. Engage your brain in new activities, alone or with family and friends. Keep organized on your reading journey, with an in-app reading calendar, or track reading minutes with the in-app timer! Browse popular books from curated book lists, specialized for every age track. Feeling stuck in your search for a new read? Create a book wish list and receive optional book recommendations from the Free Library!

The fun thing about the Winter Reading Challenge is that you don’t have to do it alone. Register for an individual, family, or classroom account, with the option to add new readers to the account as you go. Parents and caregivers, educators, school-age children, teens, and individual adults are welcome to register for our four different age tracks, listed below.

  • Birth-5 years (babies, toddlers, and Pre-K)
  • 6-11 years (school-aged)
  • 12-18 years (teens)
  • 19+ (adults)

Here’s how it works:

  1. Register to earn your first badge.
  2. Log reading minutes or completed books for a chance to earn mystery raffle prizes!
  3. Try out fun activities and write reviews!
  4. Find new reads and gain new skills!

Which badges will you unlock? Share your favorite Winter Reads in the comments below!
