I went to Clarion and applied for a job there back in 2007 .... AND WAS REJECTED OF COURSE. Since then, I have grown to see that I made a very bad decision to become a librarian....it's not much better than being a greeter at Walmart which is what I was hoping to avoid. Turns out, the greeter job would have paid better and given me more hours. Ironically -- I live in NY and was approached on Linkedin as part of this massive hiring putch....all this after what I view as having been run out of Philadelphia by my total inability to land any kind of decent employment (Temple University laughed literally in my face when I inquired about entry level "Librarian" work there....because as we all know, Academic LIbrarians are all involved in the most important work like curing cancer and I was deemed a joke). Not sure why you have to go out and find people for this menial work. There are hundreds of people per opening willing to kill their own grandmother to work for these meager crumbs. Just saying. I was 45 in 2007 and was deemed "Too close to retirement" and just generally a "loser" (because who but a loser goes to grad school in their 40s???? so goes the conventional wisdom). Well, here I am 13 years later, technically a librarian, but MASSIVELY UNDEREMPLOYED. Oh, and I should add that my cohort when I went to Clarion was all support staff who were to be bumped in in title and pay upon completion of the course. I didn't see any of them doing anything I couldn't do -- actually did -- a million times better (they were all happy to skate by with a B while I slaved away to get As. And for those who don't know....Library School is like 13th grade. Anything less than an A means you are a moron). Must be nice to be one of the perfect people.
