Attend Free Summer Camps and Workshops in August at Your Neighborhood Library!

By Shari K. RSS Tue, June 4, 2019

Summer is finally here – and that means it’s time for another Summer of Wonder with the library! Visit your local neighborhood library or visit us online to earn prizes for reading and completing learning challenges. But that’s not all!: We’re excited to introduce a series of FREE summer camps and workshops to keep the excitement going through August. Check out all that we have planned:

Camp Play and Learn, a full-day, two-week literacy camp for children entering 1st-3rd grades, is back this August! Last year’s campers learned about underwater animals, met coral reef creatures, and read a total of 20,405 minutes! This year, children will take an adventure around the world to learn about endangered animals and their ecosystems with play-based learning activities, games, books, and crafts. Animals big and small, the world needs them all!

Camp Play and Learn runs Monday through Friday, August 12 through August 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided each day. Space is limited to 15 students per location and pre-registration is strongly recommended. Contact a participating library to register: Blanche A. Nixon/Cobbs Creek Library, Lawncrest Library, Whitman Library, West Oak Lane Library, and Wynnefield Library.

Teens can explore our city's art environment at Fumo Family Library with Magical Mosaic Making, August 5 through 8 at 2:00 p.m. Learn the magic of making mosaics with our partners from Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens and share the beauty of your creations with the community.

Beat the heat and crack the code with Blackwell Regional Library’s Robot Challenge, August 20 through August 23 from 2:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Children ages 8 to 12 will engage in problem solving, teambuilding, and critical thinking with a series of hands-on robotics challenges. Teach a robot how to draw, move through mazes, and more. Are you up to the task?

Your story matters! Join instructors from one of the city’s beloved after-school organizations, ASAP Drama, for a Performing Arts Workshop at libraries throughout the city for a week of performing arts during the week of August 12 through 16 or from August 19 through 23. Children entering 3rd grade and above will learn playwriting, improvisation, theater movement, and acting.

Happy Summer!

Thank you for your interest in our summer camps and workshops! To register your child for specific camps, please contact the host library directly. Librarians at each camp location can assist you with the registration process and give you additional information prior to the camp or workshop. The Free Library of Philadelphia currently does not sponsor camps for younger children, but there is a range of amazing programs, learning activities, and story times at every neighborhood library throughout the city. Please visit our Events and Locations pages for more details about what's happening in your library today. Have a happy summer!
