A City-wide Celebration of Science: The 2017 Philadelphia Science Festival!

The Philadelphia Science Festival is almost here!  The city-wide celebration of science happens April 21-29. The Free Library is proud to partner with the festival to offer great programing for all ages!  Check out all the science events happening at your neighborhood library.

Science After School
April 24 – 27
3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The Free Library will host Science After School all week long at neighborhood libraries as part of The Franklin Institute’s annual Science Festival. Activities will be provided by various partners such as Drexel University, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, Independence Seaport Museum, and more!  Libraries hosting Science After School:

Cookie Lab in the Culinary Literacy Center at Parkway Central Library | 1900 Vine Street

6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

A cup of butter, a pinch of salt, three teaspoons of vanilla extract; baking is a science and every step is crucial—especially when making the classic chocolate chip cookie. Led by R2L’s pastry chef Peter Scarola and The Franklin Institute’s resident food scientist, Shanna Caster, attendees are able to enter the Cookie Lab to bake, dissect, and taste how one little recipe adjustment can make a big difference to the quality of a cookie! The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Culinary Literacy Center serves as the Cookie Lab as we explore—and taste—the science of baking. Registration Required »


Star Party at West Oak Lane Library | 2000 E Washington Lane
Friday, April 28
7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Join the biggest stargazing party in the region as area astronomers provide tours of the night sky that will unlock the wonders of the universe. In the event of rain or clouds, this star party will continue as scheduled.
