Farming in the city? Well, yes! And it is happening right here in Philadelphia: in community gardens, parks, backyards, and plots. There is Farm Philly, a program by Philadelphia’s Parks & Recreations, that aims to support urban agricultural projects all around the city. At the Farm at Bartram’s Garden, local high school students and community families work together as they learn to grow and cook their own food. Our next selection for Picture Book Highlights—a series of posts where we put the spotlight on a brand-new picture book that has been ordered for all agencies—will inspire everyone to start their own little farm.
In Anywhere Farm by Phyllis Root, illustrated by G. Brian Karas, the title says it all: anyone can farm, anywhere, even in an urban setting. No need for large fields or big farming equipment. All one needs is a seed, some soil, sunshine, and water. Told in lively rhymes, it suggests several possible containers, even a boot! The illustrations complement the text perfectly, depicting a close-knit and diverse community, working together. A perfect book for spring and for aspiring gardeners/farmers everywhere!
