Free Library gets into papal game, opens religious exhibit

The Free Library of Philadelphia opened its religious exhibit Monday, about a month ahead of Pope Francis' visit to the city. Running through Jan. 30, 2016, the Free Library's Sacred Stories: The World's Religious Traditions will showcase a number of sacred works, including scripture from Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism; the first bible printed in North America; and the Alcoran of Mahomet, first translation of the Koran into English.

In a remarkable interfaith gesture, to "celebrate the landmark papal visit to Philadelphia", Free Library of Philadelphia is displaying a 64-foot Hindu "Bhagavata Purana" scroll (ca. 1750-1800). Its "Sacred Stories" exhibition, till January 30, is also showcasing a leaf illustrating the famous Hindu legend of "churning of the ocean of milk" (1598), an 1813 illuminated manuscript of the Mahabharata, Birth of Krishna miniature (1650-1700), Krishna and Holi miniature (1600-1625) and illustration of scholars translating the Mahabharata (1598).

For each smile, Wells Fargo donated a dollar to the Free Library of Philadelphia to support its programs to help children read at grade level and not fall behind academically. Those who smiled could share the pictures through social media with a unique code sent to their smartphones or email addresses with the #smile@WellsFargo hashtag. Wells Fargo added $18,500, bringing the total to $20,000 for the library. The company has supported the work of the Free Library, one of the largest library systems in the U.S., for more than 25 years.

The Rosenbach of the Free Library of Philadelphia presents Catholics in the New World: A Selection of 16th–18th Century Texts, on view September 1 through January 31. This intimate exhibition will feature some of the earliest Catholic works from the Americas, including the 1544 Doctrina Breve, the oldest surviving book printed in the Western Hemisphere; and the 1584 Doctrina Christiana, the oldest book published in South America.
