The Job Readiness Online workshops have begun at the Institute for the Development of African American Youth (IDAAY). This weekly instructional series focuses on the digital literacy skills needed to look for and land jobs online. The first session, held on September 23^rd, focused on the internet safety and common scams to be aware of when searching for jobs. Several short movies were shown that demonstrated how quickly a hacker can pull data from various social media sites and public listings online to develop an accurate profile of a complete stranger. Since many of our patrons use Craigslist, there was a discussion on the dark side of the job market where many hopeful job seekers are baited to give up financial information or pay for services just to be scammed out of money.

The September 30^th session focused on drafting various job seeking documents. The instructor, Hamidou Traore – Digital Resource Specialist, presented examples of cover letters, follow-up letters and thank you letters that could be used during correspondence with potential employers. During the last part of the session, a resume sample was distributed and attendees were able to discuss topics such as layout, design, essential must-haves, and things to avoid. Several tools were suggested including a free resume critique resource and a easy-to-use resume builder.

Next week, the workshop will cover interview skills. Hamidou will record mock interviews with participants then offer one-on-one feedback to each interviewee.
