Here are the Top 10 ebooks downloaded from the Free Library's OverDrive Digital Library in December to close out 2013.

There were more than 48,000 ebooks checked out and downloaded for the month!

Stephen King's sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, took the #1 spot for the month. As it has in past months, romance ebooks accounted for 5 out of the top 10 spots. Other notable books in this month's top 10 included the YA fiction-now-turned-movie-franchise The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and the nonfiction historical biography The Bully Pulpit, which delves into the lives of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, their brutal fight for the presidential nomination in 1912, the age of muckraking journalism and the ushering in of The Progressive Era.

The following list comprises fiction and nonfiction titles from across all genres, downloaded from both our website and mobile site.

1.		Doctor Sleep (fiction, horror and suspense) by Stephen King Doctor Sleep picks up a few years after the events in The Shining and focuses on an adult Danny Torrance, still haunted by the spirits of the Overlook Hotel. He meets up with a special twelve-year old girl named Abra who has familiar psychic powers, and the two must fight off a tribe of murderous paranormals called "The True Knot". Rarely are literary sequels this good, especially with so many years in between the two novels. Highly Recommended!
2.		City of Bones (YA fiction) by Cassandra Clare Book one in The Mortal Instruments series, City of Bones sets the stage for another young adult Twilight-inspired fantasy world filled with strange, supernatural occurrences and weird creatures. Cassandra Clare mixes in elements of horror, science fiction, gothic overtones, and just enough romance to keep the story interesting. After you read the book, check out the film adapation.
3.		The Bully Pulpit (nonfiction, historical biography) by Doris Kearns Goodwin Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin returned to bookshelves in 2013 with The Bully Pulpit, an engrossing narrative disguised as history lesson based on the larger-than-life leaders and friends Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, muckraking journalism, and Progressive era politics. As the saying goes and this book, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
4.		The Light Between Oceans (fiction) by M.L. Stedman A lighthouse keeper and his wife find a baby wash ashore on a tiny island near the coast of Western Australia and decide to raise the child as their own. Needless to say, a heart-wrenching moral dilemma ends up playing out in this complex and extraordinary novel from first-time author M.L. Steadman.
5.		Always on My Mind (fiction, romance) by Bella Andre Grayson Tyler left New York City behind for the California coast, and the last thing he was looking for was love. Lori Sullivan barged into his life and turned his emotionless and solitary world upside-down. But now that the two have found each other, will Lori and Grayson ever get to live happily ever after?
6.		Can This Be Christmas? (fiction, romance) by Debbie Macomber A feel good holiday book if there ever was one, Can This Be Christmas? is the story of a disparate group of travelers who get stuck spending Christmas Eve in a New England railway depot due to a snowstorm. Through some trials and tribulations, the group rediscovers the true meaning of the holiday and readers will find themselves filled with cheer and good will by story's end.
7.		Prodigal Son: The Best Laid Plans (fiction, romance) by Susan Mallery Samantha and Jack went to school together and now they work together. Neither had really had any feelings for the other, until that fateful day at the office. Jack is trying to save his business, but can he save his love life too by taking a chance and following his heart?
8.		The Storyteller (fiction, thriller) by Jodi Picoult What starts out as a story about friendship between a young female named Sage and an old man who is a frequent customer at her bakery, quickly turns into a mystery thriller meets morality play concerning the Holocaust. A powerful and riveting read that you won't be able to put down with an ending that may leave you with more difficult questions than easy answers.
9.		The Way You Look Tonight (fiction, romance) by Bella Andre The 2nd Bella Andre in this top 10 list and the follow-up to Always On My Mind. In The Way You Look Tonight, a private investigator and a chocolatier end up falling for each other. One doesn't really believe in true love, while the other is looking to break out of a boring rut. Will their summer fling turn into an everlasting romance?
10.		Fearless (fiction, romance) by Tawny Weber Another office romance blooms in this month's top 10 in Tawny Weber's Fearless. Gia Renyard’s has it all: a good job, great apartment, and fun friends. But her love life is definitely lacking. To make matter more complicated, she's got the hots for her co-worker. When the two wind up on a business trip to Vegas, all bets are off. Will their new found love be content to let what happens in Vegas stay in Vegas?
