Join us for new sessions of our Federal Employee Transition Workshops at the Free Library. Come together with fellow federal workers for a workshop aimed at updating resumes, leveraging LinkedIn and other job search tools, and networking to help transition to your next rewarding role.
Leaving a federal government role can be both a daunting and exciting experience as federal workers in transition embark on a new career journey. It is not unusual for some federal workers to spend most, if not their entire professional careers, as federal public servants. And, for many, the tools and best practices that come second nature to their private-sector counterparts have been less relevant for federal workers. USAJOBs and the federal hiring panel process are rigid systems. Those in public or stakeholder-facing roles are often disincentivized from networking with grant awardees or sub-applicants. Federal workers are often less active on LinkedIn and place less value on networking to find future opportunities overall.
The good news is that there are a few simple best practices that can help broaden horizons and assist in navigating your next steps in the private sector or with state and city governments. With the right tools and strategies, federal workers can position themselves for a successful transition that acknowledges their federal experience while aligning with future career goals.
