Queer people and video games have gone hand-in-hand since the days of Pac-Man. Who among us hasn’t made their Sims get gay married? Or dreamt about rescuing Princess Zelda from the clutches of evil? Or built the perfect village on Animal Crossing?
Thankfully, the Free Library of Philadelphia is home not just to books, but video games, too! From unraveling intricate narratives to solving complex puzzles, video games offer a unique form of interactive storytelling that engages the mind and imagination. We have titles for everyone, including LGBTQ+ audiences. Visit one of the over 50 library branches to check out our selection of Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox games. We also recommend checking out upcoming in-person programming for gaming events.
It is important to recognize the diversity of video game players despite narrow media representations. According to a survey by the US advocacy organization GLAAD, 17% of gamers identify as LGBTQ+! Players deserve the chance to make friends in online communities without experiencing verbal harassment or bullying. More than that, the video game industry should open its doors to more LGBTQ+ designers. Let us celebrate transgender identities, not trivialize them to token appearances.
While explicit representation of LGBTQ+ themes and people must continue to grow, video games offer an important escape for young people, especially. These days, folks can enjoy solo adventures or multiplayer world-building from the comfort of their homes by borrowing games from the library.
