Find a Job and Build Your Career at the Free Library

Are you interested in working for the Free Library of Philadelphia? We have scores of different job types in diverse fields such as security, property management, IT, communications, and more! With 54 locations in every part of Philadelphia, we need dedicated, enthusiastic, and creative staff to support the incredible public resource that is the Free Library.

For current openings, visit our Careers page. But please keep reading! There is more to learn about how to maximize your Library job search.

Most Free Library roles are filled through the City of Philadelphia jobs site. Library assignments, and positions at other critical City agencies, can be explored there. For the broadest search, leave the drop down menu set for Showing All Departments. If you prefer to search for a specific job title or City agency, including the Free Library, you can type that parameter into the search field.

Also, why not register for hiring alerts for upcoming openings? You can search by job class title or scroll through all of the listings (over 950!) to see the breadth of positions. This can be a helpful exercise as related positions sometimes have different titles. For example, searching “security” vs. “guard” will yield separate results.

If you want to search for a specific job class, type it into the search bar. Some of the largest job classes at the Free Library are Library Assistant, Municipal Guard, and Librarian. Each one of these classes can be typed directly and a list will display below with additional positions. This list appears because most jobs with the Library and the City of Philadelphia are part of the Civil Service, and thus have numbers attached to them for classification. For example, Library Assistant 1 is the entry-level opening, whereas Library Assistant 2 and Library Assistant 3 are promotional titles.

Once you have identified the job class title(s) of interest, click Sign up for job notifications directly under the title. You then will need to enter your first and last names as well as an email address. If you need help creating an email address, ask a Library staff member. We’d be pleased to assist.

Additional hiring information can be explored at the City’s Office of Human Resources site, including details on residency waivers. All positions with the City of Philadelphia require you to fulfill certain residency requirements.

Visit freelibrary.org/locations to find contact details for all of our libraries or phone our Call Center at 1-833-TALK FLP (825-5357) to speak with our helpful Library staff.

We look forward to working with you!

I am non-profit fundraiser looking for new direction admin job with Free Library, one of my favorite Philly institutions. The Free Library got me through the ups and downs of the pandemic. I would like to work in one of the branches close to home. I have noticed closings for lack of staff at Andorra and Chestnut Hill. I also love East Falls and Roxborough. Would love to be part of a team to help reinvigorate the library as a community center. Thank you,Kathleen Scullion
