The Free Library of Philadelphia Presents New Exhibition: “Or Not To Be”

The new exhibition engages visitors with complex questions about mortality in a way that is both meaningful and accessible

PHILADELPHIA – The Free Library of Philadelphia is proud to announce its new exhibition from the Special Collection Division entitled: Or Not To Be. The exhibition and several related events assemble and display a wide variety of cultural perspectives on the topic of death.

“As we address a topic like death, especially one that can be difficult to engage with, we aim to create a space where individuals can explore life’s deepest questions with sensitivity, respect, and care,” said Kelly Richards, President and Director,Free Library of Philadelphia.

The exhibit will display books, music, artwork, and specially curated items from the Free Library's Rare Book Department, Print and Picture Collection, Map Collection, Children's Literature Research Collection, Edwin A. Fleisher Collection of Orchestral Music, and Sheet Music Collection. Together, these items on display examine how different cultures approach grief, and its lasting impact on individuals and communities, and the timeless existential questions it raises: Why are we here? What does it all mean? What happens after death?

“Confronting death is complicated, yet it is a shared reality,” said Gary Galván, Ph.D., Music Special Collections Curator and co-curator of the exhibition. “With this exhibition, we offer visitors a dignified perspective on a topic that crosses cultures and generations. In addition to a safe space for reflection, the Free Library provides a list of resources for further exploration and support.”

In addition to the exhibition, the Free Library will offer a series of related events. Beginning with an Exhibition Open House and Curator-Led Tour on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, this event offers a special behind-the-scenes look at the exhibition through a guided tour and reception, providing insight into the themes and artifacts on display. Other events include a philosophy discussion series, a culinary exploration of global mourning traditions, and a free estate planning clinic.

Or Not To Be is located in the newly restored Dietrich Gallery on the third floor of the Parkway Central Library. The exhibit is open today, Monday, September 8, 2025, through Saturday, February 28, 2026. Admission is free.
