CULINARY LITERACY CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW WINTER PROGRAMMING

Center to offer a variety of courses focused on healthy eating and cooking in the new year

The weather outside may be frightful, but the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Culinary Literacy Center at the Parkway Central Library is excited to present a plethora of unique culinary programs to keep you warm—and full—this winter!

In partnership with sponsor Cancer Treatment Centers of America, the Culinary Literacy Center will host Ingredients for Good Health, a free series aimed at improving health through cooking and nutrition. Both programs in the series—Snacking for the Big Game on Monday, January 26 and Emperor of All Maladies Screening on Thursday, February 19—begin at 6:00 p.m. The former aims to help participants make smart and healthy choices while they enjoy football’s Super Sunday and the latter features a screening of an extended trailer for the Emperor of All Maladies. The Ingredients for Good Health series will continue throughout 2015.

Additional winter Culinary Literacy Center programs include:

A Taste of African Heritage | Tuesdays, January 6 – February 10 at 6:00 p.m. | free with registration

Many of today’s healthiest foods have their roots in African heritage—leafy greens, sweet potatoes, millet, and okra to name a few. A Taste of African Heritage is a six-part wellness program designed to reconnect participants with vibrant ways of cooking, eating, and living that once promoted the health of African American ancestors everywhere.

Chow Down on Wellness with Veterans | Wednesday, January 14 at 11:00 a.m. | free with registration

Cooking with Herbs and Spices | Thursday, January 29 at 6:00 p.m. | free with registration

Chef and nutritionist Elizabette Andrade will help participants discover how to use nature’s finest building blocks to transform simple meals naturally! By exploring the unique profiles of common herbs and spices, participants will create savory rubs, marinades, and pastes that will help make home cooking healthy and delicious.

One Book, One Philadelphia Cooking Workshop: Maine Fish Chowder

Tuesday, February 17 at 6:00 p.m. | free with registration

Join local chef Jameson O’Donnell to learn how to recreate Orphan Train character Terry’s “Famous Maine Fish Chowder” from scratch in this hands-on class that focuses on teaching fundamental skills for putting together a delicious stew.

Framing Fraktur Cooking Workshop: DIY Saukerkraut | Monday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. | free with registration
