Free Library Hosts an Afternoon of Tango at the Parkway Central Library
All ages and skill levels welcome to enjoy special performances, dance lessons, and more
PHILADELPHIA July 8, 2013—The Free Library of Philadelphia is kicking up its heels in celebration of the tango on Saturday, July 20 from 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Parkway Central Library. Join Philadelphia’s Argentine tango dance community, author Carolyn Merritt, and the Library’s Music Department for a free afternoon of dance performances and lessons, festive music, an engaging author event, and a special milonga (tango dance party)!
Beginning at 12:30 p.m., Lesley Mitchell, Co-Director of DancePhiladelphia Argentine Tango, will curate a series of pop-up tango performances throughout the Parkway Central Library. At 1:30 p.m., Carolyn Merritt—local author, dancer, and anthropologist—will discuss her new book, Tango Nuevo, in Parkway Central’s Montgomery Auditorium. At 2:30 p.m. in the Parkway Central Lobby, Philadelphia Argentine Tango School Director Meredith Klein will perform with Pablo Garcia Gomez and teach an introductory tango lesson for participants of all ages and skill levels—no dance experience necessary! Students of the school will also give a group demonstration. And from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., after the lesson, participants are invited to try out their new skills at a fun milonga in the Lobby until doors close, with music by DJ Lesley Mitchell.
“The Free Library’s Music Department is the intellectual home of the musician, dancer, student, and audience communities of Philadelphia and its countryside. We are thrilled to be able to offer such a cross-disciplinary menu of events for Philadelphians, as well as to work with partners throughout the city to make these programs truly come to life,” said Adam Feldman, Music Librarian. “The afternoon of tango at Parkway Central showcases not only our fantastic music resources, but it brings our community together to learn something new and have fun at the same time!”
