CENTRAL SENIOR SERVICES PRESENTS NEW WORLD TRAVELER PROGRAM SERIES

Travel experts will teach seniors how to avoid trouble before it begins in the three-part series.

PHILADELPHIA, May 29, 2013—The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Central Senior Services is excited to present a new program series, “Becoming a Smarter World Traveler,” that focuses on equipping older adults with the travel skills they need for a successful and safe overseas adventure. Each session in the three-part series will take place at 11:00 a.m. in Room 108 at the Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine Street, on the following topics:

Coping With Unfriendly Skies | Wednesday, June 19
Now a business librarian at Parkway Central, Jennifer Beggans was an airline employee for years. She will provide an insider’s perspective on the airline industry, which is now associated with long delays, lost luggage, and hidden fees. Ms. Beggans will also discuss practical strategies designed to help airline passengers cope more effectively with the many challenges that they will face this summer.

Heading Off Trouble Before It Begins | Wednesday, June 26
Michael Wolinsky, Esq., believes that the process of protecting your vacation begins before you’ve signed any agreement with a tour operator or travel company. He will explain what the would-be traveler needs to do if she or he wants to head off trouble before it begins and will remind seniors that they are far from helpless if the dream vacation they imagined becomes an unmitigated disaster. Mr. Wolinsky will outline the steps an unhappy customer should take if she or he wants to get some or all of their money back.

Staying Healthy Abroad | Wednesday, July 17
Just decades ago, few Americans ever visited Africa, the Middle East, or elsewhere in the developing world. Today, an ever-growing number of people are crossing the globe, drawn by a hunger to explore family history, ancient civilizations, and exotic landscapes. However, such journeys can become a health nightmare if the traveler hasn’t done his or her homework. One of this region’s most respected public health experts, Dr. Esther Chernak—MD, MPH, and FACP—will explain just what Philadelphians bound for the developing world need to do to not merely survive but thrive in unfamiliar terrain. Dr. Chernak is the Director of the Center for Public Health Readiness and Communication at Drexel University.

In addition to special programming like “Becoming a Smarter World Traveler,” Central Senior Services offers patrons expert computer assistance; large print fiction; special collections targeted to the needs and interests of older adults; classic films; a diverse offering of magazines and newspapers; and the most comfortable furniture at Parkway Central Library. Central Senior Services is generously funded by a grant from The Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation. For more information, please call 215-686-5331.
