FREE LIBRARY TO CELEBRATE CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK WITH SPECIAL AUTHOR PROGRAMS, STORYTIMES, AND MORE
PHILADELPHIA, May 2, 2013—The Free Library is excited to host three popular children’s authors—Judy Schachner, Debbie Dadey, and Jane Breskin Zalben—in honor of National Children’s Book Week. The authors will present special programs targeted to different age groups as well as talk about their journey to becoming writers. Each program will also include a question and answer session with the audience. These author programs, which are part of the Margaret S. Halloran Family Literacy Programming Series, will take place in the Montgomery Auditorium at Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine Street, on the following dates:
• Monday, May 13 at 10:30 a.m.: Judy Schachner, author of the Skippyjon Jones series, will present a program for children in kindergarten and first grade.
• Wednesday, May 15 at 10:30 a.m.: Debbie Dadey, author of the Bailey Street Kids and Mermaid Tales series, will present a program for children in third and fourth grades.
• Monday, May 20 at 2:00 p.m.: In conjunction with the Barnes Foundation, Jane Breskin Zalben, author of Mouseterpiece, will present a program for children in first and second grades.
In addition to these engaging programs with top children’s authors, throughout the month of May the Parkway Central Children’s Department will host a series of special “Storytime Birthdays.” On Saturday, May 11 at 2:00 p.m., children and their caregivers can celebrate 50 years of Amelia Bedelia stories with Amelia herself! And on Saturday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m, participants can enjoy a “Wild Rumpus Storytime” to celebrate the 50th birthday of children’s classic, Where the Wild Things Are.
“We are delighted to celebrate Children’s Book Week with a variety of fun, special events just for kids,” said Siobhan A. Reardon, President and Director of the Free Library. “We pride ourselves on hosting wonderful events that enchant and inspire children, instilling in them a lifelong love of literacy and learning.”
Program Note: School classes must be registered in advance for the Monday and Friday programs; to do so, teachers can call 215-686-5369. Homeschoolers are also welcome to attend. Each program will last about one hour.
