Join readers nationwide as Walmart and the Free Library of Philadelphia host a One Book, One Philadelphia online book chat. On Wednesday, March 13, at 1:00 p.m. EST, visit walmartphiladelphia.com to participate in a live chat with Siobhan A. Reardon, President and Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, as she gives an in-depth discussion of how One Book, One Philadelphia has enriched the city and what directions One Book will take in the future, as well as other great literacy programs at the Free Library. Participants will have an opportunity to have a “behind-the-scenes” view of a citywide program. Walmart has been lead sponsor of the One Book program since 2011.
This year’s featured book selection, The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka, illuminates the poignant, powerful stories of Japanese “picture brides” who came to the United States during the early 1900s. Otsuka has crafted first-person plural voices that capture their collective and individual experiences as wives, mothers, breadwinners, and marginalized members of American society during both peacetime and the onset of World War II.
One Book, One Philadelphia will run through March 13, 2013.
