Philadelphia’s Tech-Savvy Mayor Visits Central Library on the Parkway, Free Library Now Offering Wireless Internet Access in all Locations
PHILADELPHIA, October 1, 2007 - Looking for a job? Tough homework assignment? Preparing for a standardized test? The Free Library is here to help. At 2:00 p.m. today, Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street visited the Central Library on the Parkway to demonstrate all of the technological resources--as well as new wireless internet access--available to card-carrying users of the Free Library of Philadelphia.
Much more than just a repository for books, the Free Library boasts more than 150 electronic resources, including more than 70 databases that cardholders can access remotely on a wide range of topics--everything from business plan development to declassified government documents to automotive repair. The Library also now offers free wireless internet access in all of its locations throughout the city. The addition of this free service was made possible by a technology endowment from the William Penn Foundation.

The Free Library of Philadelphia system consists of 49 branches, three regional libraries, the Central Library, and the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. With more than six million visits annually, the Free Library is one of the most widely-used educational and cultural institutions in Philadelphia.
