After-School Leader (ASL): Part-time Temporary
The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Literacy Enrichment After-School Program (LEAP) is hiring After-School Leaders (ASLs) for 2024–25. LEAP ASLs work with library staff to provide mentoring, interactive programming, technology support, and homework help for youth at libraries during out-of-school time hours. This is part-time, seasonal temporary work, beginning August 26, 2024, and running through early June 2025. Hiring will be ongoing until all positions are filled. The pay rate is $22.60 per hour, 20 hours per week. The hours are generally 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday–Tuesday, and 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Wednesday–Friday. These hours are subject to change based on the Free Library of Philadelphia’s hours of operation. As libraries can provide Saturday service, this schedule may be modified based on the needs of the community. Some Saturdays may be required. The LEAP ASL reports to the Library Supervisor and/or Children’s Librarian at their assigned neighborhood library.
Responsibilities:
- Create a welcoming out-of-school time environment for youth and their caregivers
- Model appropriate library behavior
- Mentor LEAP youth and Teen Leadership Assistants (TLAs)
- Implement fun learning activities daily that spark curiosity
- Assist youth with using library computers and navigating electronic resources like Homework Help Online
- Provide homework assistance to children and teens
- Collaborate with the Library Supervisor or designee to develop and promote a LEAP calendar of events
- Check email daily and establish regular communication with staff at your library
- Complete and submit reports on attendance, activities, and additional program measurements as directed
- Attend and participate in training sessions, both in-person and virtual, including LEAP ASL Orientation (some training may take place on Saturdays)
Requirements:
- Must be a resident of Philadelphia
- Experience working with school-aged children and teens
- Ability to develop meaningful relationships with LEAP participants, library staff, and colleagues
- Knowledge of general literacy skills, child and adolescent development, informal learning environments, and interest-driven activities
- Outstanding organizational skills
- Ability to guide children and teens working on different assignments and activities
- Ability and initiative to work both as part of a team and independently
- Cannot concurrently hold a position as a City of Philadelphia employee, School District of Philadelphia employee, or Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation employee
- Current Pennsylvania State Child Abuse Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Clearance, and Pennsylvania Criminal Background Clearance are required — must be for employment (volunteer-only not accepted), dated within a year prior to the start date
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree strongly preferred, or 2+ years college with commensurate experience considered
- One year of youth mentoring or informal learning experience preferred
